Kookaburras and Hockeyroos close out block one of FIH Pro League in Hobart

Mon 16 Feb 2026

A fiery contest between Australia’s Kookaburras and Germany delivered everything fans have come to expect from two of international hockey’s fiercest rivals, with physicality, pressure and moments of brilliance defining a gripping encounter in Hobart.

From the opening whistle, the intensity was evident. Crunching tackles and relentless press forced both sides into errors early, but it was Tasmania’s own Jack Welch who ignited the home crowd in the 8th minute of the first quarter. Positioned perfectly on the baseline, Welch produced a deft deflection that found the back of the net to give Australia an early 1-0 advantage.

Germany responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Jakob Brilla stepped up to a penalty corner and delivered a clinical drag flick in the 10th minute, levelling the scores at 1-1 by the end of the first quarter.

The visitors carried that momentum into the second term. Brilla struck again in the 16th minute, converting another penalty corner with precision to put Germany in front. The physical nature of the contest continued to escalate, and it was Australia who capitalised next. Following a clumsy German challenge inside the circle, a penalty stroke was awarded. Blake Govers showed composure under pressure, burying the stroke in the 18th minute to restore parity at 2-2 heading into the main break.

The third quarter was a tense arm wrestle. Both teams tightened defensively, with neither able to break through despite sustained attacking phases. Midfield battles dominated as possession swung back and forth without reward.

The decisive moment came in the 47th minute of the fourth quarter. Quick thinking from Lachi Sharp unlocked the German defence, as he threaded a clever pass into the path of Tim Brand. Brand made no mistake, slotting home Australia’s third and ultimately match-winning goal to send the Hobart crowd into raptures.

Australia absorbed late pressure from Germany in the dying minutes, showing resilience and composure to see out the contest and secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory. The win extends the Kookaburras’ unbeaten run at home and brings Block 1 of the Pro League in Hobart to a successful close.

Tom Craig was named Player of the Match for his commanding presence and tireless work rate through the midfield in a high-intensity battle.

Ireland claimed their first win of Block 1 in Hobart with a clinical 4–1 victory over the Hockeyroos, overcoming an early Australian lead in a high-stakes contest between two sides searching for their breakthrough result.

Australia made the perfect start, striking inside the opening three minutes. Olivia Downes etched her name into the scoresheet with her first goal for the Hockeyroos, finding space in the circle and finishing confidently to give the hosts a 1–0 advantage in the 3rd minute of the first quarter. The early momentum saw Australia head into the first break with a deserved lead.

Ireland responded strongly in the second quarter, lifting their intensity and earning reward from set pieces. Ellen Curran levelled the match in the 17th minute with a well-executed penalty corner drag flick, before Kathryn Mullan gave Ireland the lead in the 27th minute after capitalising on sustained attacking pressure. The visitors’ composure in possession saw them take a 2–1 advantage into the main break.

The third quarter continued to tilt Ireland’s way. Captain Sarah Hawkshaw extended the lead in the 34th minute, converting another penalty corner opportunity to make it 3–1. Ireland’s defensive structure and midfield control limited Australia’s attacking flow, forcing the Hockeyroos into rushed entries and half chances.

Any hopes of a late Australian comeback were extinguished in the 56th minute when Hannah McLoughlin sealed the result with a penalty corner conversion. Ireland managed the closing stages with authority, securing a convincing 4–1 victory and their first win of the Hobart block.

Roisin Upton was named Player of the Match, instrumental in Ireland’s defensive resilience and transition play throughout the contest.

Both the Hockeyroos and the Kookaburras now turn their attention to block two of the FIH Pro League in Hobart when they face Spain on the 20th of February in a double header.
