Kookaburras and Hockeyroos shine under lights in Hobart FIH Pro League double-header

Thu 12 Feb 2026

Australia’s Kookaburras have secured their second win of the FIH Pro League Hobart block with a composed and clinical performance against Germany, defeating the visitors 3–0 at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre.

It was a disciplined start from Australia, who absorbed early German pressure before building momentum through strong defensive structure and controlled possession. That patience paid off late in the opening quarter when sustained pressure resulted in a penalty corner opportunity. Joel Rintala stepped up and made no mistake, rifling home to give the Kookaburras a 1–0 lead at quarter time.

Australia continued to press in the second term, dominating territory and forcing Germany to defend deep in their circle. Another penalty corner in the 18th minute saw Cam Geddes extend the advantage, flicking strong to double the lead. The Kookaburras’ defensive discipline remained resolute, ensuring they took a 2–0 buffer into the main break.

The third quarter produced a moment of improvisation that showcased Australia’s creativity under pressure. In the 37th minute, Craig Marais finished off an improvised penalty corner variation, catching the German defence off guard and pushing the margin out to three.

From there, the Kookaburras demonstrated composure and maturity, managing the game effectively while denying Germany any clear scoring opportunities. Their defensive unit stood firm under late pressure to preserve the clean sheet and secure a confident 3–0 victory.

Lachi Sharp was outstanding across the park and was named Player of the Match for his relentless work rate and impact in key moments.

With back-to-back wins on home soil, the Kookaburras now turn their attention to a Friday night clash against Pakistan as the Hobart block continues to build momentum.

Later on, the Hockeyroos claimed a thrilling shootout victory over Ireland in what was their first meeting in a decade.

The contest was a genuine arm wrestle from the outset, with both sides locked in a tactical battle and neither able to break the deadlock across four quarters. Defensive structures dominated, goalkeepers stood tall, and scoring opportunities were limited as the match remained scoreless at full time.

With no separation on the scoreboard, the result was decided in a shootout. Kaitlin Nobbs showed her composure under pressure, calmly converting to secure the win for Australia and spark celebrations among the home crowd.

Amy Lawton was outstanding throughout the contest and was deservedly named Player of the Match, her energy and work rate proving crucial in the tight encounter.

The match also marked special milestones for Makayla Jones and Jolie Sertorio, who both made their Hockeyroos debuts in Hobart, adding further significance to a memorable night for the green and gold.

The shootout triumph sees the Hockeyroos record their first shootout win of the Pro League in Hobart as they continue building momentum in front of their home fans.
