Kookaburras claim third straight win with dominant 3-0 victory

Sat 14 Feb 2026

The Kookaburras have continued their strong start to the FIH Pro League campaign in Hobart, defeating Pakistan 3-0 at the Aurora Energy Tasmanian Hockey Centre to secure their third consecutive win of the year.

Pakistan’s trademark ‘ping pong’ style of hockey — built on quick hands and rapid ball movement — was rarely seen as Australia controlled the tempo and possession across all four quarters. From the opening whistle, the Kookaburras dictated terms, applying pressure through the midfield and keeping Pakistan pinned deep in defence.

The breakthrough came in the 14th minute of the first quarter when Blake Govers capitalised on sustained attacking pressure. Finding space inside the circle, Govers struck cleanly to hand Australia a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the first break.

The second quarter saw Pakistan’s defensive unit absorb wave after wave of Kookaburras attack. Despite Australia’s dominance in territory and possession, Pakistan held firm, with the scoreboard remaining 1-0 as both teams headed into the main break.

Early in the third quarter, Australia’s pressure again proved decisive. A mistimed challenge inside the circle resulted in a stroke being awarded to the Kookaburras. Govers stepped up and calmly slotted home his second of the evening, extending Australia’s lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute.

The home crowd then had even more reason to celebrate when Tasmanian local Jack Welch found the back of the net. Finishing off a well-constructed team move, Welch’s goal lifted the stadium and pushed Australia’s advantage to 3-0 by the close of the third quarter.

In the final term, Pakistan attempted to claw their way back into the contest, but Australia’s defensive structure held strong. The Kookaburras managed the game professionally, limiting Pakistan’s opportunities and maintaining control through to the final whistle.

The result not only sealed a 3-0 victory but also delivered Australia’s second consecutive clean sheet. For goalkeeper Magnus McCausland, it marked the first clean sheet of his international career — a special milestone in front of a passionate Hobart crowd.

With momentum building and confidence high, the Kookaburras now look ahead to the next challenge as they continue their Pro League campaign on home soil.
